WHITBY JET WORKERS 

The following is a list of some of the jet workers listed in the 1851 census of Whitby. It is not exhaustive.
Some are Masters employing several jet workers, others are their employees and others are individual jet 
workers who worked alone. Some of those listed are relatives/ancestors of my late wife eg John Devonshire, 
Andrew & Richard Readman, and the Noble family.

NOTES: 
(1) Thomas Andrews advertised in 1850 as "Jet ornament manufacturer to HM the Queen"
(2) By the 1870s Charles Bryon was employing some 120 men.
(3) John Devonshire was born in London of a jewellery making family but he and his brother William moved
 to Scarborough in the 1830s, both working in the jet industry. John moved to Whitby whilst his brother 
 William had his jet business in Scarborough.
(4) A pair of jet earrings by Edward Greenbury is illustrated in the Shire Album (52) on Jet Jewellery
 and Ornaments.
(5) In 1854 Isaac Greenbury made a jet chain 6 feet 4 inches long to the order of the Queen of Bavaria.
 He also made items for the Empress of France.
(6) William Wright's retail shop is illustrated in the Shire Album (52) on Jet Jewellery and Ornaments.
 His glass-topped shop counter is in Whitby Museum
